Musicology offers various types of music lessons and workshops taught by some of Tampa bay’s finest musicians and instructors.

Peter Mongaya Hogsholm, Guitarist

Guitar Instructor and President of Musicology


Mesmerized by the strange but uniquely beautiful sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Peter Mongaya Hogsholm picked up the guitar at the age of 14.

Peter is one of Tampa Bay’s most demand teachers and guitarists. As a native of Denmark, Peter attended Sankt Annae Gymnasium (a prominent fine arts and music high school in Copenhagen, Denmark). His musical palette was prepared for different styles of music such as funk, fusion, world music and jazz. Upon graduation Peter resided a half year in Manila, Philippines, where he played for Philippine recording artists Kulay and with South Border, a popular Philippine R&B group. Further studies include: Jazz Akademiet, Copenhagen and The Players School of Music, Clearwater.

Private studies with: Charlie Banacos, Mike Stern, Edward ‘Spanky’ Alford, Tower of Power guitarist Jeff Tamelier, and Fareed Haque. Masterclasses with: Joe Pass, Steve Masakowski, Robben Ford, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Vic Juris, Randy Johnston, Pat Martino, Eddie Gomez, Ingrid Jensen, and Larry Coryell.

Peter has played guitar and toured with/for Rick Derringer, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Kashiwa (Rippingtons), Eric Darius, Four80 East, Shilts (Down To the Bone), Nils, Mike MacArthur Group, Shawn Brown, Nu Soul Company, Taxi, OMNI, Irritable Tribe of Poets, Da Jam, Bobby Roman, super jam band Hong Kong Fooey and has his own trio Inner Urge. Currently, when Peter isn’t pickin’ and grinnin’, he is the head of the guitar department at the Players School of Music, and is owner/president of Musicology, a music school which goal is to ‘empower the musician within’.

Daryal Erdem, Guitarist

Daryal Erdem is our newest guitar instructor, hailing from Turkey, and arrives with considerable accomplishments to his credit.

In 2006, Daryal graduated from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Guitar Performance.  Prior to attending Aquinas College, Daryal studied guitar performance at Grand Valley State University, and Northwestern Michigan College, as well as attending the School of Jazz at the Istanbul Bilgi University in Turkey.

Daryal has been a recording artist for Ahmet Ozden Music with the band Alidar, as well as working as a studio musician for the musical director of Turkish Pop Idol, Ahmet Ozden. In 2005, Daryal recorded with Turkish Pop Idol winner Burcin Sen for her 2005 album release.  2006 was a busy year for Daryal, in which he composed and arranged eight compositions for a Turkish rock album, recorded 7 songs for Joy FM, and worked as a studio musician for Turkish diva Nukhet Duru. After 2006, Daryal has worked as a studio musician for recording artist Tarkan ve Ejder, producer Ahmet Ozden, producer Guner Metinkale, recorded an album with Turkish rapper “SIRHOT,” and currently performs around the Tampa Bay area as the guitarist for the band Men From Mars.

Daryal teaches students of all ages and skill levels, and brings a wealth of educational, recording and teaching experience to bear in his lessons.


Jeremy Powell,

Jeremy Powell was born into a very musical family. His father plays the electric bass, his mother cello, his late grandmothers played piano, and his younger brother Jonathan Powell is an accomplished trumpet player who has played professionally with artists ranging from Kenny Werner to Q-Tip to Sam Rivers. It is no wonder that Jeremy is where he is now as a result of these influences.

Before Jeremy had finished high school he had received both of the Louis Armstrong and Woody Herman excellence in jazz awards as well as numerous musical scholarships that helped him further his studies at the University of South Florida from 1997-98 and later at the New School University in Manhattan from 2000-2004. While at New School University Jeremy studied with such world renowned players as Seamus Blake, Chris Cheek, Miguel Zenon, George Garzone, and Reggie Workman to name a few. In 2003 Jeremy was awarded the John Coltrane scholarship and as a result, was featured in the 2003 John Coltrane Jazz festival.

Jeremy’s latest musical collaborations have been with the world renowned choral conductor James Jordan and the Westminster Choir and grammy award winning santur player Nandkishur Muley. Jeremy is currently based out of Tampa Bay, FL where he is teaching at Musicology and Jeff Berlin’s Player’s School of Music as well as playing with the Infinite Groove Orchestra, Inner Urge, Kelp, and the Larue Nickelson group to name a few.

Pat Close, Drums

Pat is a professional freelance drummer for both studio, and live. Starting at the age of 5 he is still at it 5 decades later. After 10 years of studying all phases of technique, and all styles of drumming he then began teaching. During that time he also became a studio session drummer. There he was able to work with producers, arrangers, and writers thereby mastering the art of playing ”for the music”, and reading charts while playing with tremendous feel. He has done numerous recordings, and television commercials. He has worked with Singer Glenn Leonard of the ”Temptations”, Singer/ dancer/ choreographer ‘’Darcel ‘’ from the famous television show ‘’ Solid Gold ‘’, pianist Manfredo Fest, and Jazz legend trumpeter Marcus Hampton.

Pat Close has been performing club dates, tours, live concerts, and Jazz Festivals with L.A. producer/ guitarist Paul Brown, Peter White, Allon Sams, Euge Groove, The Rippingtons, Ken Navarro, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Eric Darius, Greg Adams to name a few while staying busy in studio sessions as well. His work can be heard on the airwaves of Smooth Jazz radio stations nationwide, and abroad on compilation disks with keyboardist Allon Sams featuring guitarist Peter White, and vocalist Richard Jackson. Pat also had the honor of opening the 25th Anniversary of the world famous ”Clearwater Jazz Holiday”. In 2006 Pat was touring Europe that included Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Egypt performing shows for our U.S. military. As you listen to his promo CD, and or watch him on live DVD you can’t deny his great sense of groove, and feel for ”all the styles of music” that he is playing. He can be powerful yet subtle, and so musical, but dynamic at the same time.Musicology is proud to add drum instructor Pat Close to our already impressive faculty!

Lora Stoycheva, Pianist

Piano Instructor

Lora Stoycheva was born in Bulgaria, started her piano studies at the age of 7, and performed first in public when she was 8.  Lora had solo concerts at age 12, 16, and 18, participated in numerous venues and graduated with a diploma from the Bourgas Music High School. After that she continued her education at the Plovdiv Music Academy. There she developed her musical talents in classical and contemporary piano, orchestra, and choir. Lora participated in a lot of musical events with her colleagues, played in a violine quartet, as well as in other venues with professional music formations. She graduated with a Masters Degree in Piano Pedagogy in 1985.   After that she began working as a music coordinator for the municipality of Bourgas, organizing musical programs and events on a local, regional and national level.  After 5 years Lora went back to teaching as a piano teacher.   She spent 15 years at the Music High School in Bourgas, working with students from 1st to 12th grade.  During that time Lora perfected her pedagogical skills as a piano teacher, leading her students to achieve high performance and creativity goals, becoming an accomplished musician and pedagogue with many students and numerous music awards. She also worked as an accompanist in the voice classes and participated in a lot of professional venues.   Lora also continued her postgraduate studies at the Sofia University, in the Institute of Higher Teacher Education, where she graduated first with a 3rd, and then with a 2nd degree class-qualification. After moving to the United States Lora started working at Musicology in Clearwater, FL in 2006, as well as Piano Lessons in Your Home, Inc in 2007. Here she works with children and adults from all levels, from the beginner, through intermediate to the advanced. Lora’s broad music repertoire and the mastering of teaching many different piano methods allow her to adapt every lesson to the individual student, teaching theory, sight reading, technique and performance. Her expert knowledge is helping a lot of students to learn and master the piano.


Dawn Cunningham, Violinist

She is on a mission to help people express themselves musically.
